RELATIONSHIP COUNSELING
Making relationships work takes work. In your marriage, among your family members, with your co-workers and neighbors, every relationship requires skills that we are not all born with, that we don’t all have the chance to learn.
Dr. Lennox Forrest, PhD, has devoted half of his Michigan-based practice to learning and understanding why relationships fail or create so many problems for us. For 10 years he has researched healthy and unhealthy patterns.
In his research, he has uncovered some specific variables that consistently appear in successful relationships. By testing these variables with a large sample of people who have satisfying marriages and friendships, who are productive at work and in the community, Dr.Forrest was able to develop a predictive model of healthy relationships. He uses this model today to help people build and establish successful relationships.
Sports Psychology
Since founding his sports psychology practice in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dr. Lennox Forrest, PhD, has worked with numerous clients, teams and organizations, including Emanuel Steward, Dusty Baker, the Grand Rapids Rampage, and Jeff Mayweather.
Sports psychology might also be called “mental conditioning,” which is the process by which the mind is induced to adopt certain mental patterns, images, or tendencies in order to enhance performance.
Mental conditioning is based on a number of principles and techniques, like:
Goal Setting
Goal setting serves two major purposes. It is a basis for motivation and it directs behavior. Goal-setting theory states that people are motivated to work toward goals when they have consciously accepted those goals.
Creative Visualization
Creative visualization is a powerful tool for increasing confidence and motivation. Experimental and clinical psychologists have proven that the human nervous system cannot tell the difference between an actual experience and an experience imagined vividly and in detail.
Positive Self-Talk
Positive self-talk can be the most convincing message that we ever receive. One of the most powerful influences on an athlete’s performance, attitude, and personality is what he says to himself, especially during competition.
Relaxation Techniques
Relaxation techniques can help to relieve anxiety, stress, and tension, which will improve concentration, focus, and performance. The lower the stress and anxiety level of an athlete, the better the performance.
